The system makes it possible to measure the tourism sustainability of Destination Barcelona

The Barcelona Tourism Observatory: city and region has carried out a webinar to present the Sustainable Tourism Indicators System: SITS - OTB, specifying its theoretical framework, its methodology and the list indicators.

This project is in line with the Observatory's founding strategic line: the creation of a system of indicators to measure the sustainability of tourism activity in Destination Barcelona and it has allowed the OTB to become a member of the UNWTO's international network of sustainable tourism observatories (INSTO). In this way, Destination Barcelona is positioned as a destination committed to sustainability that seeks to address empirically the sustainability of the destination economically, socially, and environmentally, without forgetting the initiative’s connection to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDO). Thus, the aim of the system is to provide tools and help all the agents involved in tourism activity to make decisions.

The creation of this system, led by the OTB, has been possible thanks to the joint work of the different study areas of the Barcelona City Council, the Barcelona Regional Council, the Cambra de Comerç de Barcelona and Turisme de Barcelona as well as the universities: CETT and UB.

Please, find here the presentation and the video of the webinar, presented by Alba Lajusticia, director of the Barcelona Tourism Observatory: city and region, Laia Costa, analyst of the Barcelona Tourism Observatory: city and region, Emma Pla, director of the Master in Innovation in Tourism Management and researcher at CETT UB, and Anna Torres, Marie Curie researcher at the University of Surrey. We would also like to remind that more information can be found, together with the complete list of indicators, on the new sustainability section of the website.
