9% of tourists in Destination Barcelona live in North America

The Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona: city and region has published the first monographic report on the North American market in Destination Barcelona.

  • 9% of the interviewees of the Study of Profile and Habits of Tourists in Destination Barcelona reside in the United States, Canada or Mexico.
  • The North American tourists lodge mainly in hotels, travel for leisure reasons and stay for 5.11 nights.
  • 4 out of 10 Canadian tourists travel as a couple, while 3 out of 10 Mexicans travel alone.
  • US tourists are the ones who make the highest expenses.
  • Architecture and culture are the best-valued aspects by North American tourists.

The study, which has been carried out at the three geographical levels that the OTB covers - Barcelona city, Barcelona region and Destination Barcelona -, analyzes the evolution and the profile of tourists residing in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The number of North American tourists who have visited Destination Barcelona during the last 2 years has remained stable at 9% of the tourists’ total. Most have chosen the hotel as their accommodation (58.5%), though a significant number of Mexican tourists that have chosen other types of accommodation (57.0%).

3 out of 4 tourists of North America travel mainly for leisure-reasons and their average stay is 5.11 nights, although Mexican and Canadian tourists have higher average stays (5.58 and 5.35 nights respectively).

The average age of North American tourists is 41.65 years, yet Mexican are younger on average, with a majority of tourists aged between 18 and 34 years. The behavior of the Mexican tourists also differs in terms of people they travel with, since they usually travel alone (33.2%), while Americans (33.4%) and Canadians (44.0%) travel as a couple.

US tourists are the ones who make the highest expenses on arrival transportation, accommodation and stay, both per person (€ 1,778.1) and per person per day (€ 188.5).

If the expenses during the stay are analyzed, the Americans are also the tourists that invest the most in these, except for the shopping expenses, in which Mexican tourists devote the highest amount.

The three most visited Tourist Interest Points (PIT) by the whole of the Americans, Canadians and Mexicans in Barcelona city are Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter and the Sagrada Familia, in this order.

Finally, it is noteworthy that the best-valued aspects by American tourists are architecture (9.6 / 10) and culture (9.3 / 10).

Destination Barcelona 2018” is the first monographic report on the North American market in Destination Barcelona released by the Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona: city and region. It has been based on the data obtained from the Survey of Tourist Profile and Habits in the Destination Barcelona.
