The Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona updates the Destination Barcelona tourism forecast report

The Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona updates the Destination Barcelona tourism forecast report as of 30/09/22, which from this edition onwards, becomes a monthly report.

 

Transport offer

  • International air capacity: The worldwide flight air supply for the next 3 months will be between 87% and 90% of the capacity recorded in the same period in 2019.
  • Flight offer at Barcelona Airport: Barcelona is currently served by 71 airlines flying to 176 destinations, of which 43 are intercontinental.
  • Cruises at Port de Barcelona: 121 cruise ships are expected to arrive in Barcelona in October, while 82 will operate in November and 42 in December.

 

Tourist offer and professional events

  • Accommodation: By the end of August there were 438 establishments open with with 75,864 bed supplies (-2.5% on the total).
  • Culture and leisure offer: 87 out of 89 cultural facilities monitored in Barcelona city remain open.
  • Professional events: There are currently 126 congresses confirmed for the upcoming years, 57 of which from October to December. In the meanwhile, about 100 applications are open until 2027.

 

Tourist demand

  • Online search trends: Over the last week, Google searches from Spain have decreased slightly for both Barcelona city and Destination Barcelona. Most of searches for both geographic areas are conducted from Catalonia.
  • Flight and accommodation search trends: From 13/09/22 to 19/09/22, the positioning of Destination Barcelona in Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom has been higher than the ranking of international destinations world average (10th position in accommodation searches and 9th in flight searches).
  • Hotel bookings by date of booking: From 19/09/22 to 25/09/2022, hotel bookings in Barcelona city stood at 91.9% compared to the series peak (February 2022), and higher than during the previous week (85.1%). In Barcelona region, bookings reached 82.2% of the series peak (March and May 2022), but lower than in the previous week (91.7%). As for their origin, in September international bookings exceeded domestic bookings in Barcelona city (71.1%), while in Barcelona region, domestic bookings (61.9%) surpassed the international. The lead time stood at 49 days in Barcelona city and at 30 days in Barcelona region.
  • Hotel bookings by date of stay: Currently, the level of bookings for the rest of the year is above the level recorded last year, especially for stays in October and November. The US market leads the hotel bookings for the last quarter of the year in Barcelona city, while the Spanish market, those for Barcelona region.
