The OTB presents the first monographic report on the Profile and Habits of Tourists in Destination Barcelona 2022 on the scenic arts

The profile of the scenic tourist stands out with respect to the overall tourist who has visited Destination Barcelona in being a younger person (35.5 years on average), of international origin (76.4%), who visits Destination Barcelona for leisure (74.1%), who stays more in private homes (with friends, relatives) (21, 1%), that when they hire the accommodation they do it mainly online with TTOO, T.agent or others (54.0%), that they arrive by plane (70.1%), that they travel more with friends (21.6%) and stay 6.4 nights on average in the municipality where they spend the night (1.5 nights more than the total number of tourists).

Once in Destination Barcelona, this is a tourist profile that spends more on transport (358.6 €) and stay (79.35 €), but less on accommodation (57.51 €), that carries out more activities during their stay, especially going to the beach and shopping and partying more, that rate the different aspects of the Destination more positively and go on more excursions outside the municipality of overnight stay (24.8% vs. 21.1% of 2022 overall).

The Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona: city and region presents the monographic report on the scenic arts, which includes the main conclusions of this profile of tourists in the three usual geographical areas that the OTB covers: Barcelona city, Barcelona region and Destination Barcelona. It is worth highlighting the inclusion in these monographs of the possibility of comparing the profile studied with the same profile from the previous year and with the overall number of tourists who have visited the Destination by hovering the mouse over the response options in the graphs.

 

Sociodemographic profile

  • Tourist profile: In 2022, the typical profile who has visited Destination Barcelona to attend concerts, music festivals, theatre or cinema is that of a man (63.2%), with an average age of 35.5 years, with university studies (71.8%) and working as a salaried employee (59.6%).
  • Origin: Although the international market has led the ranking of origin of this type of tourist in Destination Barcelona (76.4%), in the Barcelona region, we can observe a significant share of the market of national origin (43.3%).

 

Travel planning

  • Information sources: Most of these tourists, as with the overall number of tourists who has stayed overnight in Destination Barcelona in 2022, continue to be guided by the information they find on websites (58.9%), with Booking, Tripadvisor and Googlemaps being the most used. Information provided by their friends and family also plays an important role in this tourist profile (35.1%).
  • Alternative destinations: 59.1% of these tourists still do not consider any alternative destination in the municipality where they spend the night.

 

Transport hiring

  • Transport on arrival: The plane has been the most common means of transport used to reach destination Barcelona (70.1%), followed by the private car (16.2%) and the train (7.9%). Noteworthy that in the Barcelona region, unlike in the case of all tourists in this territory, the plane has overtaken the use of the private car as the most common means of transport used to reach the destination municipality (43.9%).
  • Hiring channel: The purchase of arrival transport has been carried out, once again, mostly through the company's website, with Ryanair and Vueling being the most used.

 

Accommodation hiring

  • Accommodation typology: More than half of tourists have stayed in a hotel (52.7%), followed by overnight stays of tourists in private homes (with friends, relatives) (21.1%) and holiday apartments (HTUs) (10.0%).
  • Anticipation of the reservation: Scenic tourists who visit Destination Barcelona mostly book their trip between the last week (27.6%) and the last month (25.7%) before travelling.
  • Hiring channel: Accommodation has been carried out mostly through OTAs (online travel agencies) (54.0%), with Booking being the most used. Noteworthy that in the Barcelona region, tourists attending concerts, music festivals, theatre or cinema have been carried out mostly their accommodation through the company's website (37.5%).

 

Characteristics of the travel

 

  • Travel purpose: Leisure has been the reason for the majority of tourists who come to Destination Barcelona (74.1%).
  • Average stay: In Destination Barcelona, the average stay was 6.4 days, data very similar to the previous year. Noteworthy that the average stay of tourists attending concerts, music festivals, theatre or cinema is 1.5 nights longer than that of all tourists visiting Destination Barcelona.
  • Repeatability: In 2022 there has been a significant increase in the number of tourists visiting for the first time the municipality in which they have stayed compared to the previous year (48.5% vs. 39.2%).
  • Accompanying persons: 39.9% of travelers to Destination Barcelona has come as a couple, followed by those who came alone (28.7%) or with friends (21.6%). However noteworthy that in Barcelona city most travelers have come alone.
  • Internal transport: 63.3% of tourists have chosen to travel on foot within the municipality, 45.1% by metro, 25.8% by bus and 24.6% by taxi.

 

Activities at the destination

  • Activities undertaken: Going to restaurants (95.3%), taking leisurely walks to relax (92.1%) and doing cultural visits (81.4%) are the activities most carried out by tourists, apart from going to concerts, music festivals, theatre or cinema, during their stay in Destination Barcelona.
  • Excursions made: 24.8% of these tourists in the Destination have made an excursion outside the municipality where they stayed. This proportion remained higher in Barcelona region (46.8%) than in Barcelona city (12.0%).

 

Expenses per person

 

  • Average expense: The expense of scenic tourists during their stay in Destination Barcelona have been distributed as follows: € 358.60 in round trip transport per tourist, € 57.51 in accommodation per person per day and € 79.35 in other expenses per person per night. Noteworthy that the value of expense per person per night for the scenic profile is higher than the total average for tourists who stayed overnight in Destination Barcelona in 2022 (€ 79.35 vs. € 67.34).
  •  Breakdown of Expenses: Tourists continue to spend, once again, almost half of their expense during the stay on food and drink, and distributing the rest, in that order, on entertainment, shopping and internal transport.

 

Evaluation

  • Evaluation of the municipality: The tourist who visits Destination Barcelona is mainly attracted by the climate (8.66), by the character and friendliness of the people (8.63) and by the bars and restaurants (8.59), and values the whole of this destination municipality very positively (8.74). Noteworthy that in Barcelona city this profile of travelers values the city's architecture (9.19), culture (8.87) and entertainment (8.71) very positively.

The Profile and Habits of Tourists in Destination Barcelona 2022 has been undertaken thanks to 799 surveys to visitors that stayed overnight in Destination Barcelona in the months of January to December 2022 in any type of accommodation other than a second home or a cruise and who attended a concert or music, theater or film festival during their stay in the Destination, with the objective of getting to know better the profile and habits of travelers during their stay in Destination Barcelona.
