The character and kindness of the local people, the most valued aspects by tourists in Destination Barcelona

The OTB publishes the third capsule of the 2019 Tourism activity report, which includes information on the tourist evaluation, citizens opinion, and meetings tourism.

  • The most valued aspects of the Destination Barcelona municipalities keep being: the character and kindness of the local people (8.49), public transport (8.41), and bars and restaurants (8.28).
  • The Americans (9.06) and those who travel for leisure reasons (8.72) are those who value the best the Destination municipalities in general.
  • Almost 3 out of 4 Barcelona residents believe that tourism is, on the whole, rather beneficial for the city, while in Barcelona region, 9 out of 10 think that tourism is beneficial for their region.
  • In 2019, 433 congresses (+ 8.3%) that attracted more than 380,000 delegates (+ 1.7%) were held in Destination Barcelona.
  • 72.1% of the meetings held in 2019 were international.

 

The OTB has released the third capsule of the 2019 Tourism activity report with information on the evaluation of tourists, the citizen opinion, and meetings tourism in Destination Barcelona. The 2019 Barcelona Tourism Activity Report, provides data about the three geographical levels that the OTB covers: Barcelona city, Barcelona region, and Destination Barcelona.

 

Tourist evaluation

The tourists' general evaluation of the Destination Barcelona municipalities has reached a score of 8.62 out of 10 in 2019, 8.79 in the case of Barcelona city. The recorded values ​​are very stable if compared to previous years.

8 out of the 11 aspects that are valued in the Destination have been rated over 8. The most valued aspects are the character and kindness of the local people (8.49), public transport (8.41), and bars and restaurants (8.28). On the other hand, the aspects with lower scores are the noise (7.14) and the accessibility (7.68), which this year is a novelty as a common aspect to value in the three geographical regions.

As for Barcelona city, the best-considered attributes keep being the architecture (9.28) and the culture (8.95). The least valued aspects, in this case, are the noise (6.89), the general cleanliness (7.81), and the accessibility (7.86).

In Barcelona region, the general average score of the municipalities remains at 8.27 out of 10. The best-considered aspects are the character and kindness of the local people (8.54) and the safety in the city (8.41). However, the two least valued items are the parking space supply (7.07) and the accessibility (7.32).

In general, tourists from the United States are those who give the best scores in all the aspects except for some items such as the trading hours or the accessibility in Barcelona city or those aspects linked to the mobility in Barcelona region.

If analyzed by travel purpose, no significant differences have been noticed in the rating of the different attributes. However, tourists traveling for leisure reasons have consistently given higher ratings than those who travel for personal or professional reasons. Also, the general evaluation of the municipalities in the three geographical regions has been higher for those who travel for leisure than for other reasons.

 

Citizen opinion

It is noteworthy that in Barcelona region almost all the inhabitants think that tourism is beneficial for their region (92.3%). However, in Barcelona city, this proportion is lower, since those who believe that tourism is rather beneficial for the city are 72.9%. It should be said that the percentage of undecided in Barcelona city is higher: 10.4% do not know how to value it or believe that it is neither beneficial nor harmful, compared to 1.2% in Barcelona region.

 

Meetings tourism

In 2019, 1,733 meetings (+0.3%) were held in Destination Barcelona, ​​welcoming 664,607 delegates (+2.0%). 7 out of 10 meetings were corporate meetings and incentives. Those that experienced the greatest growth were congresses (+8.3%), while those that grew the most in number of delegates were workshops and courses (+16.1%).

On the other hand, the meetings were mostly international (72.1%) and January, May, June, and October were the months when the most took place in Destination Barcelona.

Finally, Fira de Barcelona recorded over 1.8 million visits and 13,500 exhibitors.
